The autonomous submarine that captured the internet's imagination with its whimsical name has delivered its first scientific payoff. Data gathered by Boaty McBoatface during a 2017 expedition in the Southern Ocean has helped researchers identify a previously unknown way that climate-driven winds intensify turbulence deep below the ocean's surface.
Findings from the mission were published Tuesday in the journal PNAS, marking the first peer-reviewed results from the yellow submersible's inaugural voyage. The research combines Boaty's underwater measurements with data from the British research vessel RRS James Clark Ross, offering a more detailed picture of the ocean's depths.
Boaty spent three days in April 2017 traversing 180 kilometers (about 111 miles) along the ocean floor, recording temperature, salinity, and turbulence. That data, when paired with ship-based observations, revealed a mechanism by which stronger winds over the Southern Ocean—intensified by climate change in recent decades—can amplify turbulence in deep waters.
Why the Southern Ocean Matters
The Southern Ocean plays a central role in regulating Earth's climate, absorbing heat and carbon dioxide. Yet its remote and harsh conditions make it difficult to study. The new findings help clarify how changes in surface winds might influence the ocean's deeper layers, which in turn affects how the ocean warms and how sea levels rise.
Alberto Naveira Garabato, a researcher involved in the study, said the work is "an important step in understanding how the climate change happening in the remote and inhospitable Antarctic waters will impact the warming of the oceans as a whole and future sea level rise." His comments were included in a university news release.
Eleanor Frajka-Williams, another researcher on the project, emphasized the novelty of the data: "The data from Boaty McBoatface gave us a completely new way of looking at the deep ocean."
The submarine's name originated in 2016 when the Natural Environment Research Council invited the public to suggest names for a new research ship. The online poll overwhelmingly favored "Boaty McBoatface," but officials opted to reserve that name for one of the ship's autonomous submersibles instead. The ship itself was later named RRS Sir David Attenborough.
The mission underscores how public engagement can intersect with serious scientific inquiry. While the name may evoke a smile, the research it enables addresses fundamental questions about the ocean's role in a warming world.
As climate change continues to alter wind patterns, understanding these deep-ocean dynamics becomes increasingly important for predicting future conditions. The PNAS study provides a baseline for further research into how the ocean's interior responds to atmospheric changes.
