The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has earmarked $82 million to support 93 projects across 28 states, a move aimed at accelerating the commercialization of innovative nuclear technologies. The funding, announced on the agency's website, is intended to help push these technologies toward market readiness, though the amount is a fraction of the billions typically required to develop new reactor systems.
The investment targets a sector that has struggled with high costs, safety concerns, and public opposition. While countries like China and India continue to build reactors using conventional designs from the 1970s, the DOE's approach focuses on upgrading the technology itself to address these longstanding issues.
University Research and Small Business Support
A significant portion of the funding—$36 million—will go to university-based research. This work will cover materials development, nuclear waste disposal, advanced manufacturing techniques, fuel production, and broader nuclear technology improvements. The academic component is designed to foster a pipeline of innovation that can be translated into practical applications.
In addition, the DOE is dedicating about $7 million to the Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) initiative. GAIN aims to streamline the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's approval process for private companies seeking to build new reactors, and to connect innovators with DOE laboratories. The initiative has already awarded grants to companies including GE Hitachi, Westinghouse, Terrestrial Energy USA, and Transatomic Power Corporation. Terrestrial Energy is also set to build a prototype of its integral molten salt reactor.
Separately, up to $2 million will be distributed among eight small businesses to assist nuclear industry startups. This support is intended to encourage domestic development, as past processes have been expensive and lengthy, prompting some startups to build reactors abroad.
The DOE's funding aligns with broader efforts to address climate change by advancing nuclear energy as a low-carbon power source. By investing in research and regulatory reform, the agency hopes to make nuclear power more viable and competitive in the U.S. energy landscape.
